Breaking point or spurring point?

After a strenuous day I felt like throwing in the towel. I felt like the pot of gold was not at the end of the rainbow (or was it me who was not reaching the end of the rainbow?) It was one of those days when you feel the whole weight of the world on your shoulders, a type of day were you even get to the point of believing that stones are deliberately rising out the ground to trip you as you walk past.

When so much weight bears on us, we tend to bend towards breaking point. Doubt creeps into our confidence bank and suddenly we are not sure what we set out to do. When the strain hits, our emotional strings are stretched to twanging point and we are not sure anymore what music our lives is producing.

It is at such time that most of us lose the plot. We turn to the nearest person or item and we vent at them. We run away from addressing the demons in our lives and try to cast out demons we see in the next person. We deny that we have hit a muddy patch because we were not walking carefully; instead we blame someone for switching paths under our feet!

I have learnt in this life that I have lived that progress is like climbing a mountain. The scree and rubble is at the bottom and all trash and rolling stones come to rest there. This is the resting point for those who give up, but wait, the same resting point is a starting point again. So when life rolls you to the bottom of the mountain for the umpteenth time do not take it as your domain, use it as a re start point.

I have learnt in this life that to progress is like going up a hill. Your breath is belaboured, calories are burnt, the body suffers wear and tear and you fight against gravity. To some this would imply giving up and rolling down but the wise man does not read the adverse, instead as they go up, they see improved blood flow instead of suffocation, they see body toning instead of weight loss, and they see strengthening instead of the pain of scratches.

So the man who gives up surrenders because he perceives what is happening to him in a negative manner. He sees death in trying to reach the summit but the man who presses on endures the same conditions but strives on because what they perceive happening to them is in the affirmative. As they breath in short gasps all they imagine is the joy of breathing unpolluted air at the summit. It is the same mountain, two different people and two different endings simply because of the mindset.

So when we turn our pain stops into audit points we are able to gain more mileage. When we turn our blame game into introspection time we gain knowledge about ourselves. When we turn our self-pity into self-drive we discover the hidden courage reserves that have been latent for ages. The fact lies in the mind-set.

I have set my mind to turn all my pain into lessons , I accept that all will not be easy but in all that will hit me I will flip the coin and see the good I can derive from it. I have set my mind to turn all obstacles in my life into hurdles in a steeplechase: items to be leapt on the way to the finishing line and not items at which to abort my race.

Tomorrow, as the sun rises, my life and the race I am living will take lessons even from the thunderous claps that will floor me. I will not throw in the towel but I will wipe the sweat with the detractor’s towel so I can see clearly and keep walking!!

Re-store to factory settings?

After a massive struggle I discovered that I could not operate the gizmo in my hand anymore. Every option given in the menu served to confound me more and more. I could not even remember how to revert to the point where I could simply make calls and forget about sending video clips, going online etc.

This had started as a simple adventure to while away lazy time (is there anything like that?). As I scrolled through my phone menu I found it asking me questions like ‘activate diverts?’’ accept adverts?’’ ‘’ turn on community broadcast?’’ Etc. I adventurously consented to these and when I wanted to use my mobile for a call I found I had barred myself from making calls and my phone was no longer giving delivery reports. Wow!!

Mystified, I tried to retrace my steps and I took me agonizingly more time than the time I had spent on the lazy run and after all the effort, I was still none the wiser !! This is when common sense tells you to look for the manual but the instructions apparently worsened my plight until I got to the last menu page which asked me “Re-store to factory settings?’’.

Now this is an ominous question, after all the tangle and mess I was not sure what factory settings meant but what had I to lose? I accented and the phone dimmed 30 seconds and suddenly I had my phone back to the state it was when I unpacked it minus all the personal settings I had dictated to it.

Suddenly I was free again. Free to dictate terms and set up my profiles (and hopefully not free to cause another glitch again).

This set me thinking. After so much re designing of our lives, after so many alterations to our Life operating systems we at times find ourselves at wit’s end not knowing what to do to untangle and undo the issues portending. At times we reach the verge of wanting to decimate ourselves because of the situations we would have gotten ourselves into. Like my mobile, we punch so many buttons in a bid to learn but only discover we are now worse off than the time when we were applying the simple mode.

My phone set me thinking. If I could revert to original factory settings and re deploy my intents with the phone could I not do the same with those facets of life that I have hit painful glitches with? If my mobile could revert  to a communicate mode , be able to text and report sms delivery once again then I can also revert to the betterness mode , the mode that seeks to make things better , the mode that says I can do better . If a man-made gadget can res discover itself after being messed up what more a God made being?

All we need is to find and punch the consent button to the question ‘’ Re-store to factory settings?’’ and then we will find ourselves back to basics.

As the sun rises tomorrow face your glitches, confront your snags, labour on your meltdowns: start by re storing to factory settings.

seeing beyond the giants

The good book has a story that runs between Numbers 13 and 14. The sum of it is that a spying mission consisting of a dozen men was sent to spy the land meant for occupation. After the sojourn they returned with the first grade produce of that land and the intelligence report.

The fruits in their excellent taste signified the good land, fertile soil, good climate and all one would desire in prime land. The fruits signified fertility and excellence. Suffice to say, the report indicated that the land was flowing with milk and honey and was every man’s dream.

Added onto that was the fact that the occupants were TOWERING GIANTS!!  The spies indicated that in comparison to the settlers they had seen themselves as grasshoppers and thus had no hope of conquering the land and taking it for the nation.

10 of the spies shuddered and opined that it would be better to forgo the juicy grapes and settle to for the grim dust of the desert because of fearing the towering giants. They missed the point. It must be clear that to be in possession of prime land you must be a fighter! You must be ready to fight for your land because it is desired by everyone. To obtain or possess and attain quality is a battle filled with a lot of challenges and only those ready to face the difficulties can occupy the land.

2 spies, Joshua and Caleb never wavered. They knew that prime land came at a price. They admitted that the giants were there but they had the resolve to take the land. They did not mask the risk and effort called upon them to possess the prime land, they did not deny the existence of the giants but all they did was create a desire for the milk and honey that went beyond the towering giants.

The 2 spies eventually prevailed. The nation eventually saw beyond the towering giants. They saw to the good of the land, they saw to the fertility of the land that they wanted. They envisioned the 1st grade produce and all the good that would come with occupying. That good towered over the giants and they went for the land.

The year will have goals and intentions. The more crucial and luxurious the goal, the more towering would be the giants. Like the 10 spies one can opt to eat the grime of the desert out of fearing the towering giants or like the 2 spies one can opt to face the giants and see the cream, milk and honey beyond them. Your perception and hunger will determine whether you stay in the desert or you battle to prime land.

Giants are not the destination. See them as benchmarks; see them as milestones and not as un-crossable rivers. In all the times keep the envisioned land in mind, the vision will make you see beyond the imposing giants. Hunger for the land, hunger for the quality grapes and detest the desert grime. That will boost your resolve and up your courage to take on the giants and take the land.

Tomorrow as the sun rises, the giants will be there. How you see them and how you desire your goal will determine whether you see beyond the giants.

Bring on the giants!!
